Riparian pleasures, very refreshing

David M. Cornell

David M. Cornell

Growing up in the Northern California hills, this plein air [open air] artist began painting landscapes in oil. Although he continued to study art and his medium, his main career was as a civil engineer, serving in this role for the US Air Force as well as for a time as a civilian in airport construction.

His present studio is at his home in Lebanon, Illinois. Here he enjoys a full schedule of outdoor and studio painting, teaching, and continuing art studies.

Cornell believes, “Paintings done directly in nature are influenced by changing patterns of light and shadow, as well as by the sense of sound, smell and touch.Plein air painting helps capture the spontaneity of an experience that exists but for a passing moment in time, much like recording a treasured event in a visual diary.”

I resonate to his boat paintings with my own childhood memories and associations. While his art depicts what are probably Mississippi River vessels, they remind me of those I would often see in my childhood, on the Ohio River running by my native place, Evansville, Indiana.
